Compaq 615 laptop.
2. What exactly happens when trying to start?
It just does not boot from the USB device. No errors are displayed.
3. From which media are you trying to start Tails: DVD, USB stick
installed manually, USB stick installed with Tails Installer, SD
card?
The USB stick which does not boot was installed with the Tails
installer.
A USB stick installed in Windows with the Universal USB Installer[1]
will boot.
A USB stick created with Fedora's liveusb creator will boot. I noticed
that this will create a stick with an msdos partition table but the
Tails Installer creates a GPT partition table.
I also did a different manual installation than the method outlined on
the Tails site:
- Create 1GB msdosfs partition and set the bootable flag. Mount
new filesystem at /mnt
- Extract the contents of the ISO (7z x tails-i386-0.21.iso -o/mnt)
- rm -rf /mnt/[Boot*
- mv /mnt/isolinux /mnt/syslinux
- rename 's/iso/sys/' /mnt/syslinux/iso*
- umount /mnt
- syslinux /dev/sdX1
I've also tried a few different USB sticks and SD cards with the Tails
installer. Each stick/card yields the same result on this computer.
4. Have you been able to start Tails successfully on this computer
before, from another media, or with another version of Tails? If
so, which ones?
This is the first time that I've tried to boot Tails on this machine.
I've not had this issue on three other computers.
5. Does the same media start successfully on other computers?
Yes, there are no issues on my workstation nor my wife's computer with
any of the bootable USB sticks I made.
6. Have you been able to start Tails successfully on the same computer
using different installation methods? For example, it might start
from a DVD but not from a USB stick.
Yes, optical media will boot fine, as do manual installations to USB
media on this laptop. Only installations with the Tails installer fail
to boot on this machine.
