Okay -- Done. Got root terminal, gave mkdir and mount commands with
apparent success, no change. I have booted tails on another computer,
also tried other floppies (all of which are fine on those machines
under windows) with the exact same results: Whatever I do, Tails says
"No media."

Both machines are Dells -- A Dimension 3000 and an Inspiron model that
I can't remember.

(And thank you for pointing out 'first steps.' I had missed that
completely ...)

The floppy drive has an icon in the 'my computer' display just as the
other devices do. Double clicking (OPEN, right?) gets "No media." I
can right click and get a menu that includes 'mount' ("No media") and
'detect media' (Nothing happens.)

Doesn't matter whether there's a disk in the drive or not. Inserting a
disk makes no difference. Attempts to open the device do cause it to
be selected -- the LED comes on -- but evidently tails can't make
sense of whatever's coming back.

I'm homing in on 'bug.' I did look at the list, the FAQ, etc. but
found nothing. Does anyone have anything else to suggest before I try
reporting this?
