Facebook disabled chat via xmpp, it hasn't worked for me in quite a while.
If you were to chat with others on Facebook chat via pidgin on tails it
would merely hide your location from Facebook, they would still know who
you are (likely) and what you are saying to who.
If you used OTR it would hide the contents of your communications, but
nothing else.

Get a jabber/xmpp account from one of the plenty free providers, maybe even
one that can provide you with a .onion address. Sign up for that account
through Tor, and never access it without Tor. If you are careful with who
and how you hand out your username and always use OTR this can be a safe
and anonymous way of chatting online.
