We considered giving more instructions on checking for available space but ended up rejecting the idea. Based on several things: - In Tails, your laptop might have had more space available in the persistent storage than outside (which would be in RAM). But this is not necessarily true as modern laptops get more RAM and Tails is running from USB stick which might have small persistent storages. - Outside of Tails, in the vast majority of cases, disk space will not be a problem so we didn't want to bother everybody else with instructions recommending to check for the available disk space. Especially as people might be on different versions of Linux, Windows, or Mac and might not know how to do this check. That's why we thought that only discretely indicating the size of the ISO image was the best trade-off: people who are concerned and know how to do the check can do it, the vast majority who won't care won't face issues, and in rare occasions in Tails, like yours people will have to do try and error. We also investigated whether it would be possible to check for available space in the location chosen for the download but also rejected the idea as it was technically more complicated than useful.
