Hi u, with a great pleasure I can report my issue has been resolved thanks to your help!
I have noticed your reply in the VMWare thread[0] > A user reports the following workaround: "turned on "Enable I/O APIC" in > virtualbox's motherboard settings; now it starts and seems fine." so I checked my BIOS settings and found out that APIC ACPI support was turned off (don't ask, I never touched my BIOS' Power settings) . When I re-enabled it, both Tails 2.7 and 3.0a1 boots fine again, and my 2.6 USB stick got also upgraded successfully and boots 2.7 now. It also fixed the graphics issue I've had (got no more than 4 fps in Gnome), but the graphics, gui effects and animations are now smooth again, as in 2.4. I'd suggest this info to be added to the known issues page[1].
