I must be looking in the wrong page as the "about tails" page doesn't list 32 
or 64 bit. Can you point me where to look?

Tails 2.11 and newer will tell you if you're running a 32-bit machine.

You can manually check in /proc/cpuinfo if you want: a 64-bit CPU
will have the "lm" word listed somewhere in the "flags" line.
