Ouch, sounds bad.

Seeing *both* problems, that seem unrelated from a software point of
view, on the same USB stick makes it tempting to blame data corruption
caused by failing hardware.

I sincerely hope you had good backups of the persistent data,
even though we don't make it easy yet.
