You can lookup the NTS tile number for the area your interested in at 
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/topo/map

Also the Alberta files are the ones from the original import, many of them 
suffer from the unconnected/duplicate node problems that plagued the parts 
of the Alberta import.  If you email me the areas that your going to work in 
I can probably regenerate the complete .osm file to not have that issue (but 
I might not have time to get to it right away)
