Welcome to OSM. You could start with https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Beginners%27_guide as well as other great information contained on the OSM wiki. The main thing to remember is that unlike Google, OSM cannot accept any data from copyrighted sources or data that sits under a licence that is not compatible with OSM. Our main mapping sources are the imagery layers available through the various OSM editing software and personal knowledge or survey.
