Hi
Vegetation/habitat mapping including woodlands is currently under-recorded in
the sense of official tags on OSM. In the UK, Phase One Habitat classification
is the basic survey method and is available here
http://www.jncc.gov.uk/page-2468
This is a widely used method and has some handy hints about categorising
woodland on page 49.
Perhaps in the long run OSM could adopt some of this method/tags. Anyway, just
some food for thought.
landuse=trees would have been a good tag, then expand on that with
managed/unmanaged/species/deciduous etc.
But I've been using landuse=forest for plantation type woodlands and
natural=wood for 'semi-natural' woodlands.
cheers,
Hawkeye
