AFAIK, mapnik has rendered linear barrier for quite a while. The problem it did have, which appears to have been sorted now, was landuse & barrier tags within the same polygon. Previously It would display one or the other. At lower resolutions it only display the infill eg, cemetery, but at the higher res the barriers would take over. Unfortunately the mkgmap program for Garmin maps still has this problem.
