This is the line I have always taken. If a road is unadopted (generally saying "Private Road") then I still access, even if I have to get through the gate (tradesman button sometimes), but if I am challenged I explain what I'm doing. It's happened a couple of times and with one it wasn't a problem to carry on and on the other the person wasn't happy I was recording what the person felt was private information, so I left but managed to fill in the gaps on another visit J
Oh, and wearing my fluorescent OSM vest helps avoid being challenged! If I come across a sign that talks about trespassing I generally steer clear unless I can be sure what the sign is referring to. Despite being marked "private", access rights may be the same as any other road (i.e. "persons have a right to pass and re-pass"). Unless it is listed as a Public Right of Way in the Definite Map and Statement, I would imagine that the only real way to find out is to test it legally - for example, if the residents applied to have a gate erected across the road. I would say, go on and survey, and if you get challenged explain what you're doing. If someone gets upset about it then just offer to leave. :-) Rob _____ No virus found in this message.
