It seems that we have been using building=ruins incorrectly a lot. :) It does 
**not** refer to the ruins of a building, but to buildings that were 
deliberately built as ruins, e.g. a folly you might find in a formal garden. 
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:building=ruins There appears to be 
about 800 instances. http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/JBK with some clustering in 
certain areas.

In general, historic=ruins should be used, but alternatives are discussed here: 
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:historic%3Druins When there is none of 
the building left historic=archaeological_site can be used.
