To me everything is ultimately an area (even a point, that you really
really zoom into  ;))

A point is thus only a convenient way of representing an area at a certain
scale. On a world map, a city is a point, but on a city map, it becomes an
area.

Its possible to derive a point as a centroid of an area very easily, but
you cannot get an area from a point.

Looking at it this way, it just makes sense to map everything as an area
whenever possible, and this makes points redundant. Hope I made the point
clear.
