Subject: Re: [Talk-us] 25or6to4 NHD imports

Howdy, After discussion with Toby, I am updating the list with my import
efforts. First, hopefully this message goes through, as none of my previous
ones have worked... Second, was introduced to a better way to create a new
account, so the TexasNHD account will be used for uploads. Third, I have
been taking the NHD shapefiles, pulling out only the areas more than 0.5
km^2 for this round of uploads. This edited shapefile was run through
shp-to-osm.jar with the NHD rules file on the wiki, then uploaded piece by
piece through JOSM. For error checking, have then redownloaded the areas
that were uploaded and doublechecked for errors/open ways/dupe notes/etc.
Once (if) we have minutely diffs going into the APIs, I will do a
triplecheck for any more glitches.
Thanks for explaining your process a little. It does sound like you
are doing some good work and being careful about things. The bit of
visual checking I did around Toledo Bend Reservoir showed that your
outline was substantially better than what was there before (I think
PGS, so no surprise I guess) so keep up the good work.

As Paul mentioned, there are some subtleties in the NHD data. I know
in some areas, pretty much all linear features were imported as
waterway=river even for small things that should have been
waterway=stream or something else. This became glaringly obvious when
the osm.org stylesheet was updated to render rivers at a lower zoom
level and northern California went completely blue from all the
"rivers" - so something to watch for if you start venturing to other
NHD data.

Looks good but there are many (> 100) objects without any tag - islands I guess and many existing islands are not member of the multipolygon forming the lake.
