I have been playing with creating off-line data for rendering on a mobile device for business applications. I am working on a construction site and the data is useful for locating equipment, identifying offices, scheduling tests and maintenance etc. This is typically proprietary data, which can not be shared. There may also be cases where a mix of open and closed data could be provided as a service. e.g. A bank which wants it's branches mapped (open), as well as office layouts (closed).
OSM open source tools really are great!! I thought this may interest others and I would be interested in sharing ideas with anyone who is interested and/ or has experience in osm data. 1) What I have been able to do so far: OSMAND for Android is my starting app. It provides a MapCreator to convert osm data to a off-line vector map, which also provides indexing so text searches are possible. It supports multiple vector maps and raster maps. josm provides the means to create the osm data file (I just need to remember not to upload, default when closing, or stay off-line). josm plug-in opendata is great for bulk import of points with metadata from Excel, csv or similar after coversion to Lat/ Lon WGS84. josm plug-in PicLayer allows importing a raster drawing as background. e.g. Plant layout or Aerial photos. Key coordinates are imported with opendata for alignment of the drawing/ photo. 2) What I would like to be able able to do: Export rasters (layouts and photos) directly to osm map tiles. That will allow Raster data to be viewed directly as a map layer. Customise the data that is converted by the OSMAND map creator. Option available via custom xml file Evaluate other apps that will do the same or better especially for iphone and Windows mobile. 3) Other going forward: Web based osm data / tile services (hosted or local). Any suggestions or other ideas (on or off list) on 2 especially would be appreciated. The Openstreetmap ZA list has become waaay too quiet recently. Hopefully this provides some food for thought and discussion on practical use of OSM. Regards, John
