Prior to the existence of Ubuntu-MATE I had successfully loaded the package mate-desktop-environment (and mate-desktop-environment-extras) directly from http://mate-desktop.com/ , most of which settings have successfully transferred over to Ubuntu-MATE (exceptions are some gnome-panel applets, but re-adding those applets fixed that). So there is a high degree of compatibility between Ubuntu-MATE and the release from the MATE Desktop folks. - --Bob.
