I'm no expert, but it that's the case, I believe you can just use mysqlhotcopy, without stopping the database. Even if it does a lock, it should be very fast, since its a file copy, not a dump. Post: delete temp file, rename file back to index.php Is it unrealistic for my office to expect 100% uptime, even at 3:30 am in the morning (those whacky recruiters).
