Definitely an interesting article, but a little short-sighted. For the vast majority of PHP applications, the biggest speed improvements are made by reducing the size of the pages generated (to minimize the time in transit) and optimizing the database (efficient layout, proper indexes and optimized queries). Every little bit helps, but the impact of most of those tweaks is marginal compared to the gains to be found in those 2 areas for most systems.
