My best experience with this has been using convert (imagemagick) to
pump them out into individual images. You have to specify the
resolution and density, and in the end what you have is images, so that
even if you pump them back into pdf files, the usual pdf text search
features wouldn't work. I hope something better is suggested in this
thread -- I'd love to see it.
