Hi Andy, You are right, updating to windows 10 pro, which I would suggest only doing if you must, can cost more in software not running under windows 10 or peripherals not having drivers for windows 2010. I am still using very successfully windows XP pro on four of my desktops, keeping my AVG internet security up to date and using firefox when necessary for browsing.
I love I like using outlook express and outlook 2003, which doesn't have all the issues that windows live, thunderbird or other some what accessible email clients are being used under windows 7 and higher. I also have windows 7 pro on 5 other desktops in my home, with office either 2010 or 2013, so I can see what works on windows 7 pro. I also have 1 laptop with windows 8.1 and 1 laptop with windows 10 pro, so I am up-to-date and can support my customers who are running those operating systems and see what peripherals and software work under windows 7, 8, and 10. I also received office 2016 from my wife's job for $10.00, but have not installed it yet, since I don't see any advantage in using it right now, to tell you the truth, I am still using very successfully office 2003 on my XP machines with the patch that opens up office 2007 and higher file tuypes. My thinking is, if it still works for what you want to do, why upgrade unless your work place demands it or you like being a test monkey! Eventually like all , you will be forced by Microsoft to be at windows 10, but that is years away and for now windows XP pro and Windows 7 pro are just great! I'm sure my computer can run Windows 10, but I fear that there may not be Windows 10 drivers for my peripherals, meaning that I will have to spend money to replace them, so this isn't necessarily a painless or free deal for me. You can update to windows 10 for free until July 17 of this year. After that, it will cost $100.00. Windows 10 is much faster and more secure that Windows 7 and easier to use and faster than windows 8 and 8.1.
