I heard on the news last night a lot of those computers were running windows xp! This is why I stopped using Xp when Microsoft ended support for it.

Hi, Folks. Thanks much for the info. Now, all we need to do is wait
for the critter to arrive - unless FedEx is being held hostage by
ransomware; heard they were one of the folks hit by this stuff.--Matthew

Hi:

If the laptop features the Creators’ update, you use Control-Windows Enter to turn on narrator. If the laptop uses the Aniversary edition, simply press Windows Enter.

During setup, the Creators edition will actually begin speaking using Cortana when you turn on the laptop for the first time. In the anniversary edition, you won’t hear anything.

Hope this helps.

By the way, am getting a new laptop with Windows 10. What's the key combination to start up Narrator? Thanks in advance.--Matthew Chao

Narrator has evolved quite a lot, including a responsive synthesizer,
in the last few years. Its keystrokes use the CapsLock as the
"Narrator key". I think that capslock-F1 brings up the list of over
100 keystrokes that Narrator has.
It's a very different program than the rest of the screen readers. I
think it would be most useful for diagnostics, and not for real-world
use. Narrator even supports braille displays now, through a modified
version of the BrlTTY program that is also used in Linux and
BrailleBack for Android.
