take a look at the near by explorer app if you have a i phone or android fone.
or tablet if it has gps built in.

http://tech.aph.org/ne/
it only costs $80 for the full version.
if you use the on board maps and points of interest it will not use any
cellular data so it is low cost to use.
you could try the free android version. but this one uses the google maps and
points of interest so it would use cellular data and it is less responsive then
useing the on board data files.

Subject: Window-Eyes as a trend setter anda question

Good evening list

tonite I was surfing the Blind Tech Podcasts on my iPhone and came
across a very depressing one dated May 26 where they were talking about
in with the new and out with the old and how Window-eyes is no more.
One of them stated words to the effect that VFO wanted everyone to use
one screen reader. Also, mention was made of Jaws market share (my
words) in the voc rehab community.

I'm wondering if Window-Eyes will be the beginning of a trend where
awesome technology gets gobbled up and lost in the future.

I ask this because I'm toying with purchasing Sendero's Seeing Eye
GPS-Xt app. Thing is, Sendero lists a bunch of companies they are
somehow affiliated with - and one of those companies is Hims which used
to be affiliated with GW. Hims used to make the book Sense, but that
has changed into a product called, I think, Blaze, probably no more
support for Book Sense although, like W-E, it is probably still in use.

Hims-GW -- Window-eyes gone. could Hims-Sendero mean the Seeing Eye
GPs XT app will be short lived?

This may seem like an off topic question, but being Window-Eyes loyal
users perhaps listers will best understand my concern and perhapsprovide
me with some input. I'm a little leary of spending cash (even at the
discounted convention price) only to find my chosen technology disappear
or left unsupported in a few years.

I look forward to any feedback on or off list.

Brenda
