Robert, The KNFB reader uses a camera in a phone or other divice to take a picture of a document. Then, it performs optical character recognition (OCR) and reads the content. Its strongest point is that it performs the OCR in such a way that it can start reading very quickly. As Josh says, it can be made to process files as well. It takes some practice to know how far away from a document to hold the camera and to aim, but there are tools to help with that. There are other OCR apps that are cheaper, but all in all, I've been happy with the KNFB Reader. It does take practice, though.
My experience has been regardless of how good an app is, different apps sometimes provide the best results so one needs multiple tools at their disposal. And it's a fabulous OCR which is how it started. I have it on my iPhone and can read just about anything imaginable. Think beyond a document reader. I've read food boxes, cans, button labels and serial numbers on gadgets, etc. It also works pretty good when you have to read your computer screen or any other kind of display. There's also a free one from Microsoft called seeing AI. It's useful but doesn't compare to KNFB when it comes right down to it.
