Jst for the fun, in all this playing around, did you try restarting your computer? Have seen a few cases, where some behavior sticks, and once the computer has been restarted, things work normally again. Just be aware, I am talking about a real restart, not just going in and out of sleeping or hibernation mode. Worth to keep in mind, should you run into a similar case later on.
