I think you did it by deleting messages without reading them... So you have zero messages (because they have all been deleted) but three new messages (because three have not been read) and subtracting the number of new messages from the total gives you -3 old messages ;-) I'll commit a fix to make it ignore deleted messages when working out the new messages.
