This can increase the framerate dramatically with high-res cameras, or provide software pan/tilt by only sending an rectangular image region selected by the user. This is for instance very nice for high-res, high-speed object tracking. --
If you got really fancy you could have a split optics into a lowish res camera pair with a high res camera, so that regions of interest could be automatically tracked...
