It's what lat/lon should be uploaded to OSM so it's consistent world wide, you don't need to support all sorts of weird and wonderful local datums, even if there is drift due to continental drift etc. Australia is moving NNE about 7cm per year on average, but different parts of the country are moving at different rates.
