There's no need to enter your password to change it your preferred languages - if you leave both passwords blank then it won't touch the password. My guess is that your browser filled in the first password automatically and it then thought you were trying to change the password and complained that the two passwords were not the same. None of which has any bearing on the language - if it accepts the changes then he language will be changed.
