Hi!

Our current "default maps" will display mountain_pass=yes only at very high zoomlevels (z17), although these are often "important geographic features". Especially road maps will usually display passes even more prominently than surrounding peaks.

Nowadays people seem to "fine tune" their mountain_pass=yes nodes, by adding a place=locality tag, so the name will appear at much lower zoomlevels (z14) - for me that's tagging for the renderer.

You can argue that place=locality (aka "A Locality is a named place that has no population.") isn't wrong for a pass. However, we're not tagging locality together with other unpopulated places that have a name e.g. natural=peak, so I don't think we should do it for passes.

Current "render problems" I've noticed, which might cause this kind of tagging:

Zoom 14 (Osmarender showing only locality):
http://osm.org/go/b...@ummlan-?layers=o

Zoom 17 (Osmarender showing both locality and mountain_pass):
http://osm.org/go/b...@ummlans-?layers=o

I'd suggest:
a) We might want to improve rendering of mountain_pass=yes to appear in lower zoomlevels (e.g. z14 on both default mapnik / osmarender maps) b) We might want to discourage the use of place=locality to "enforce" rendering of otherwise "well known tags" that has "low render priority"

... or do I miss something obvious?

Regards, ULFL

P.S: I've already added a corresponding note to:
