That would have to be a very subtle hatch, otherwise it would look ugly to me.
You don't want things that are not there (yet) to stand out more than
things that are. At least not on a general purpose map.
I don't know if Mapnik can even do hatching? I bet it can. It is
awesome & can do anything.
