It's images, original documents, etc.
I thought "Why don't we have that? We can store images of places,

them (WikiMedia) to do it for us and work collaboratively.
Here I'm with you. If those Images were stored centrally and hosted by
OSM or the wikimedia foundation I see a much better chance of not
having a big image-link-cemetery in the database.

Especially the wikimedia Commons or something similar is perhaps a good
way to solve the problem of "image-link-cemetery" as it allows versioning.
I don't have to add a second image link; I can add a new Version for a
file, if I think. it's better (and discuss it with the community).
If there is an additional system to add non-replacing alternative new
versions, that would be even better.
