It doesn't change the geometry of objects, but individual tagged nodes -are- hidden. The US is a special case as you say.

For more detailed information, I would naturally use the OSMI inspector licence view, or the Garmin map overlays (on the road).

However your CleanMap shows that there is a lot of hope for both

Since Cleanmap doesn't include any nodes that will be lost, it's more like looking through way-colored glasses. It also doesn't show any intermediate edits, which GREATLY minimizes the effect in areas like the U.S. where most roads started out as imports.
