Talk of "usable" is meaningless without saying what you want it to be usable for - who the target audience is.

Unless of course the argument is that the site should be able to do absolutely anything that a random visitor might ask of it - make tea? mind children? order books from amazon?

I don't see what this has to do with the history view either - being able to efficiently explore changes in an area is clearly something of huge interest and usefulness to mappers.

I also haven't questioned the usefulness of the POI stuff - just about whether different approaches have different audiences and are therefore of more or less interest to us.
