That seems kind of an understatement - the white areas are quite puzzeling for example - they are definitely not areas below a certain node density, easy to see if you compare to the recent node density map by Martin Raifer. They also do not appear to be areas with low population density (for example large essentially unpopulated areas of the southern Arabian Peninsula are included).
