Hi Carlos, Welcome to the OpenStreetMap project, and thanks for your interest. Adding information to the OpenStreetMap database from another dataset, like city data, is a very advanced activity. I can't recommend it for somebody who is in a hurry. :-) Adding data that you observe, about the things that interest you, is much simpler, and I can recommend that everybody start their involvement with the OpenStreetMap project by doing exactly that; map your neighbourhood. Make sure that your favourite restaurant and grocery store are included in the OpenStreetMap database. There are some guidelines: The best data to include is verifiable, permanent and significant. Ideally, we don't include data that is personal or private in some way, data that is too rapidly changing, not significant, or that is opinion. The "personal" aspect of the births and deaths data that you mention may be an issue. I imagine that there will be objections to including death-location data into the OpenStreetMap database. There are potential objections based on the accuracy (how precisely is it know where a person died?) and on privacy, and perhaps on other grounds. On the other hand, if you have data about a street address where a person died, it would be acceptable to confirm that the street address is properly included in the OpenStreetMap database. If you want to know more about including data from external sources in the OpenStreetMap database, please start your reading here[1]. The Import page on the wiki and several connected pages from there, will give you some details on the required steps before you begin. If you want to know more about how to map your neighbourhood, and that is a great way to get started participating in OpenStreetMap, then have a look at the beginners' guide[2] Best Regards and Happy Mapping, Richard [1] http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Import [2] http://wiki.osm.org/wiki/Beginners%27_Guide _______________________________________________ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
