The maps are very specialised and show things clearly in a way that the default render does not. For example street names in some Canadian cities have an official English name and an official French name. The default rendering does not offer me the choice. Cycle paths, lanes etc, together with the rules around them are not of interest to many mappers but they are to a cyclist. The many different ways that OSM can be rendered are a strength not a weakness.
