The Open Data initiative put the spotlight on government transparency and we 
saw 
the creation of the data.gov and data.gov.uk portals.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt were instrumental in creation 
of the UK portal. On this side of the pond, Professor James Hendler and the 
Tetherless World Constellation at RPI have done work for the data.gov portal, 
in 
particular publishing linked data sets:
