I was rather hoping that the W3C spec would be out before the Saxon
implementation, but it got held up because people in the XQuery WG
didn't want it in XQuery 3.0. The net result is that there's a
shortage of documentation.
I have remedied the lack of documentation by placing a specification of
maps as implemented in Saxon-PE 9.4 at
http://dev.saxonica.com/blog/mike/2012/01/#000188
Any resemblance to any spec that might be published by some future W3C
working group is entirely serendipitous.
