This model you are describing is evolving.
The old model of the web is moving towards a thick client architecture.
For instance, HTML5 applications support local document databases.
How do you productively query such database? How do you synchronize the
database with the cloud?
I feel that XQuery has answered these questions already but is being
ignored.

Same story on the backend, when it comes to query flexible documents,
XQuery has answered a lot of questions that the NoSQL community is only
starting to discover and yet it seems that there is a cultural gap between
the two communities.
