What it says is how many are left not how many you've typed. There is
also a 1 in parentheses. And it seems to be subtracting it from 160 so
you'd have to do some quick math but it should work.

While you are in the open message do a talks then long press of soft
key 2
and that should give you what you want.

Is there a way of checking how many characters you have written in a
text? Say you're writing a tweet and you want to know if you've reached
140 characters. I thought someone had suggested one, but back then I
didn't do twitter.
