I take your point though I do not send in every text. I am also selective about 
the ones I send and to whom. I have some vision and can see that each has a 
yellow background and when one is highlighted it is blue. Then I can also see 
when it moves down to the next line. As for if someone told me about their dog 
being hit  by a car, I would not feel it was appropriate to send an emoticon.

Well I've never received a text message containing one of these characters. 
How would you know which one you are sending if talks does not describe them 
you could send the wrong one in a given context that could be offensive as I 
believe there is one for just about every human emotion .  If someone had 
just told you their dog had been hit by a car  and killed you would not want 
to send the wrong graphic character representing human emotion.
