Thanks for the comments, Pinar! I agree with all of your
superlatives, and would like to add some other comments with the "organizer"
hat
on, for the benefit of other workshop organizers (and their students).
Miriam Larici and Hugo Patyn left "Forever Tango" some months ago.
Miriam in particular had been with the show for many years (her photo
graces the Forever Tango logo), so they are well established in the Tango
world.
However, they just recently went on the teaching circuit as a couple, and are
consequently not as well known on the teaching circuit as they deserve to be
(although that is sure to change very quickly). I believe that other than
classes in Los Angeles, they have done "travelling weekends" in the US just
with Sonny Newman in Seattle and now with the Tango Society of Boston.
I would rank them highly on all the characteristics that an organizer looks
for,in addition to the things that a student looks for:
- Professionalism. Very prompt at returning e-mails and phone calls
during the organizing phase, and generally easy to work with. Very
professional during the workshops, from the way they dressed, all
the way to bringing their own wireless microphone with them, and
everything in between.
- Balanced attention to men and women. Miriam conducted almost all
the "group" teaching (and then they both went around to help couples
individually). She described both men's and women's parts in detail.
Their method of describing a figure was to do it slowly while Miriam
talked through everything that the man had to do or watch out for or
pay special attention to (repeated a few times). Then they would do it all
over again, this time Miriam would talk through everything that the
_woman_ had to do or pay special attention to or other women's
technique tips (also repeated a few times).
- Effective teaching technique. They had clearly prepared for
their classes and had a plan, yet adapted it effectively to the class.
They start with exercises, them move on to elements, and finally combine
the elements into a sequence. Everything fits together, so even if you
didn't get the whole sequence, you still got the elements and
technique (which is the important part anyway). They do teach in English, and
Miriam is especially fluent.
- Good choice of material. All useful stuff that can be done in a
social setting, while still with interesting embellishments and "pizzazz."
The advanced material was not a test of "how difficult and technically
complicated a figure can you do" but still challenged the advanced dancers
without completely losing the intermediate ones.
- Personality, personality, personality. A delight to work with in every
respect as an organizer, a delight to take classes from as a
student, and a delight to be with even just as company. Th! ! eir hosts (who
are also Board members of the Tango Society of Boston) also indicate that they
are wonderful houseguests.
- Beautiful dancers and excellent exhibition, of course.
Before engaging them, I had called Sonny Newman in Seattle as a
"reference" (since we did not know Miriam and Hugo by reputation or
personal contact at that point) and got this seemingly too-good-to-be-true flow
of compliments and superlatives; I can now confirm that these were well
deserved, and can also recommend them highly. Tango workshop organizers who
would like to contact them can go to their web site at
http://www.tangoandfire.com/ (which also lists
their cell phone number 206-255-3634 and e-mail address).
