TANGO MAYA MEXICO, Feb. 28-March 8, 2003
TEACHERS AND WORKSHOP LEADERS: EL INDIO AND MARIANA, AND CECILIA GONZALEZ
(PENDING)
Your trip would begin in San Miguel de Allende, for this first "mini"
tango festival. San Miguel will fulfill any lust for retail therapy, and
quench your overworked tango muscles in the four hot underground springs
around town. In between tango classes and a milonga at a gorgeous colonial
restaurant, we will learn more about Mexican symbolism and culture through a
local professional lecturer and guide.
At a local theater, we will do an evening performance headed by El Indio
and Mariana, and Daniel Diaz (bandoneon musician) and the local tango
orchestra of San Miguel. the history of tango will be shown with music,
dance, instruments, and a singer. We will have a workshop in Tantric tango
("Tango Sutra"!), and other special classes for men and women.
On to Oaxaca (city) by plane through Mexico City, where we will stay at a
beautiful hotel near the central markets, churches, shops, and museum. Oaxaca
is a land at once mountainous, but then dropping to it's famous seacoast to
the West.
A mix of Mayan descendants, the Mixtec and Zapotec natives still speak their
own languages above Spanish, and their arts, pottery, cooking, and weavings
are famous everywhere. Tango classes will be set in a large wooden floored
room at "El Encuentro," a workshop center 15 minutes from our hotel.
We'll have a cooking class in Oaxacan specialties, and a walking tour of some
of the MANY sights in Oaxaca.
Return on Friday to Mexico City for the local milonga with some wonderful
dancers, and fly home out of Mexico City.
THE PRICE? $1,065 IS THE BASE PRICE. Price will increase each month.
