Dear Folks,
I have been thinking about ways of making our tango
community here in Ithaca, New York grow. I have met
ever so many people who say that they adore the tango
music and would love to be able to dance to it, and
want to get around to learning "some day". There are
also many who started but never got far enough along
to be able to enjoy a milonga. To address their needs
and draw them into our tango community, I thought we
might try an intensive one-day workshop, somewhat
different from what is usually done. Here are the
specifics.
Best wishes,
John U. Wolff
This work shop differs from the usual six-weeks'
course in that it happens in one day and not as much
material is taught. It differs from the usual
workshops in that the students
(1) get only
enough material to be able to enjoy the dance (and you
don't need much)
(2) they learn not with other beginners as partners
but with experienced dancers as partners
(3) the participants are limited in number so that
each person gets plenty of individualized attention
(4) careful attention is paid to pedagogy --
especially to giving the students plenty of practice,
as much review as needed, and not introducing
anything new until all the particcipants have
completely internalized the old.
*The workshop will be confined only to those who are
beginners or if they have begun once before, are at a
basic enough level that they could be considered
beginners. The material in the workshop will be
strictly beginner's material -- just enough to be able
to dance in a milonga and enjoy it.
*The teachers will be Robin and Jen (Robin Thomas and
Jennifer Bratt), who are to my mind, absolute geniuses
in pedagogy. Many of you know them from the very fine
workshops they have held here in Ithaca.
*I would like to invite those of you on the list who
are beginners or at the beginning level to sign up.
*As for the experienced dancers, I would like to
invite you to come to the workshop, free of charge, to
act as "resource personnell". Your role would be to
partner a beginner, not teach him/her -- just to
partner him or her . The theory behind this is that
people can learn much better if they are dancing with
a partner who already knows how to do it. The
instruction will be given by Robin and Jen, who are
excellent in that department. In fact, I am sure that
the experience will he helpful in improving your own
dancing. Even though you will not be doing anything
"new", you will discover that there are ways you can
improve what you have been doing all along.
*Experienced dancers -- please come for as much time
as you can afford, as your participation is crucial to
the success of the students
*Potential students: please sign up with me, as soon
as possible, as the number of participants will be
limited to no more than Robin and Jen can give full
attention to personally.
