ABOUT AVANTANGO:
Pablo Aslan's Avantango is an ensemble featuring some of the world's leading
tango musicians presenting breathtaking performances that embrace the XX!st
century. Avantango performs the tango as an ever-evolving art form,
incorporating jazz improvisation, and turning historic cliches upside down.
Mixing the legendary music of Astor Piazzolla with contemporary thems and
rhythms, the ensemble reclaims the tango as a living tradition. Here, at
last, is a vibrant collaboration of musicians, dancers, poets, singers,
composers, and choreographers committed to Tango as a meaningful expression
of our times.
The Washington Post:
"...Brash and irreverent, the ensemble was very much in sync with tango's
roots in the late 19th century. (...)[They] left no doubt as to the
continued vitality of the form, with a jaunty, jazz-inflected performance."
Jon Pareles, The New York Times:
"(...)with Mr. Aslan's 'Tango Afuera' the modern tango showed life after
Astor Piazzolla."
Gene Santoro, NY Daily News:
"Avantango (...) uncovered a colorful, bristling range of musical
possibilities(...) harnessing jazz improvisation to take off in some
suggestive, fascinating musical directions."
Cleveland Plain Dealer:
"The tango...is a mutable thing, likely to wander from its origins to
embrace elements of jazz, classical music and myriad popular influences.
The result is tango with the trimmings, elegantly and earthily served by
players who relish their collaborative art."
Avantango will also be performing at the Tango Ball on Saturday, July 19th
at the Temple deHirsch Ballroom. Special performances by Miriam Larici and
Hugo Patyn. Tickets on sale now through Sonny Newman - $35 advance/$40 at
the door - includes live music for dancing 8P-1A, show, dinner & dessert
buffet. Elegant attire requested, please.
