The lively "tango orgy" of dancing, partying and learning, which is The 4th ANNUAL NYC SUMMER TANGO FESTIVAL begins Thurs. July 22, with.......
³LUCILLE'S QUIRKY EAST VILLAGE WALKING, CHATTING AND CHEWING TOUR². designed for our festival's visitors by tanguera Lucille. Lucille is a long-time East Villager (who conceived the idea of our festival in the first place!) who wants to introduce visitors to the charms, quirks, and history of this ethnically and artistically diverse part of town. The tour starts at 8th St. and 4th Ave. at Astor Place (in front of Starbucks), 12:00. The chewing will take place around 1:15. At 3:00, Lucille guides you back to the subway and down to a Hit and Run milonga on the Staten Island Ferry (yes, it was her quirky idea some 8 or 9 years ago) Astor Place was named after John Jacob by mistake--should have been after the great tango composer, Astor Piazzola, who lived near. We might have a renaming ceremony at this time. You'll visit 3 historic sites within 300 feet of Astor Place, Pay homage to the place where Piazzolla lived, See one of the quirkiest garden structures on earth, Get a quirky souvenir from our quirky, kitsch-packed lunch stop, Peek in some quirky shops, Stop at the Charlie Parker residence, Pop into one of the most famous old-timey Italian pastry shops, and more all within a few square blocks. It will be leisurely, fun, and even informative. So, rain or shine, 12:00, in front of the Starbucks at Astor Place. Many buses and subways go there. Free for those in full festival package. $10 for all other tango dancers. Eats not included. Reservations for the tour helpful.
