The Tango Society of Central Illinois is hosting a festival in Urbana IL the weekend of Feb 29 - Mar 2, 2008. Our continuing focus is on tango milonguero, the social tango danced in the milongas of Buenos Aires. Tango festivals in Urbana are recognized as fun, educational, and relaxing events that bring together dancers from all over the Midwest and beyond.
For this festival we have a distinguished teaching team: - Alicia Pons (Buenos Aires) is a popular instructor who shows how the tango of Buenos Aires milongas can be a most elegant dance, rich with style, musicality, and creativity for both men and women. She is highly respected role model for women's style, and is effective in communicating to men the skills they needs to provide women an enjoyable dance experience. She is well known for being responsible for transforming the dance of many men and women tangueros to have greater sensitivity to one's partner. - Robert Hauk (Portland OR), with years of dancing and teaching experience, including numerous trips to Buenos Aires, communicates essential skills for thriving in crowded milongas, emphasizing technique, navigation, improvisation and musicality throughout. The strong foundation skills of many dancers of tango milonguero in the US can be traced to study with Robert. Robert's extensive knowledge and appreciation of tango music also makes him one of the tango DJs in highest demand for tango festivals in the US. - Melina Sedo & Detlef Engel (Saarbruecken, Germany), through their teaching and performances, are recognized for their favorable impact on the growth and development of close embrace tango in Germany, France, and Luxembourg where they teach regularly, as well as throughout Europe in their participation in tango festivals. They bring a unique flair in showing in their performances how social tango can be expressive and creative, while at the same time emphasizing the importance of technique in their teaching. Details of our program will be announced soon.
