FWIW, I've been taught that this is not good practise because 
it leaves the lady vulnerable and unprotected from the other dancers. 

With her back to the tables, in the outer ronda, she's safe and 
we can take our time getting started without the risk of her being 
bumped or, worse, being stepped on. Never trust the other dancers
to know what they're doing. :-)
