1) The partner dance challenge. As cliched as the phrase is, it is
true, it takes two to tango. You may be the best dancer in the world,
but coupled with the worst one you'll be the worst couple. Listening
to your partner and adjusting your moves to them is a challenge.
2) The improvisational challenge. The 10000 miles tanda starts with
the first step. Every step is the first.
3) The musical challenge. Even the simplest pieces ("D'Arienzo -
techno music from the 1930s") have more interesting rhythms than most
rock and all pop songs you'll ever encounter. More challenging pieces
have all these stops and starts and tempo changes.
4) The meditational aspect of it. When I dance, I don't think about
anything else. For clearing my mind, tango works better than "regular"
meditation. I keep saying tango should be covered by the "mental
health" portion of my insurance - if I didn't dance, I sure will be on
the psychiatrist's couch!
